Coin History
The early years of the United States Mint were marked by the tendency to employ the same basic design across all denominations.  Although Gilbert Stuart's Draped Bust motif made its debut in the summer of 1795, Chief Engraver Robert Scot did not find the time to introduce this design into the Half Cent series until the turn of the 19th century.  The Draped Bust Half Cent was produced from 1800 through 1808, many years seeing the use of earlier-dated dies as the Mint attempted to make maximum use of what little high-quality steel its personnel could procure.  As such, mintage figures often represent the number of coins delivered in a given calendar year and not necessarily the number of coins produced with a specific date.
Although more plentiful than their Liberty Cap predecessors in an absolute sense, extant Draped Bust Half Cents are still scarce coins when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics.  Most Mint State survivors trace their existence to three hoards.  Two of these hoards were comprised of 1800-dated examples discovered in New England before 1900 and in the 1930s.  The third hoard, discovered by Henry Chapman circa 1906, included examples of the 1806 Large 6 variety.  Although these finds have made Uncirculated Draped Bust Half Cents obtainable for a fairly large number of collectors and investors, we caution buyers that the supply of Mint State coins is still far below that required to meet current (to say nothing of anticipated) market demand.  It should come as no surprise to read, therefore, that problem-free Mint State survivors of all issues rarely remain in our inventory for long.
