    PENTAX Pentax Electro Spotmatic (ES)
1971 Asahi Optical introduced the Pentax Electro Spotmatic, the world's first single-lens reflex(SLR CAMERA) with a 'fully automatic electronic shutter'. With an electric shutter, full-aperture metering, and an aperture priority program mode. The Electro Spotmatic is identical to the ES. In 1973 the improved ESII was introduced. All ES models provide full aperture metering. Shutter speeds from 1/60 to 1/1000 sec. work even without battery power.
It offers what has since become familiar as aperture-priority automatic exposure (shutter priority AE was already possible with other cameras, such as the Canon F-1, at this time). Electronic shutter timing makes aperture-priority AE possible because it allows the shutter speed to be essentially continuously variable, not restricted to whole or half-stop values. Manually-set shutter speeds on the ES are mechanically timed, however (and so not dependent on the camera battery, so the camera is fully operable (though without metering) at all normal hand-held speeds, in the event of battery failure). The ES also makes early use of a memory circuit in exposure control, to store the exposure setting in the brief period of 'blackout' when the mirror is moved to allow exposure.
    Content Item:
Pentax Electro Spotmatic camera, SMC Takumar Zoom 45-125mm F4 Lens(a free UV filter and hood included)
    Specification
    Type:
    35 mm SLR(S
ingle-Lens Reflex) camera with TTL metering and aperture-priority AE
    Lens Mount:
    42mm thread (Pentax screw mount)
Asahi emphasized the advantage that, since the mechanisms involved in this mode of AE were in the camera body, not the lens, the camera could be used, in AE, with almost all existing Takumar lenses (in contrast, shutter-priority systems like Canon's had required the development of new lens mounts incorporating rapid stop-down mechanisms).
    Standard Lens:
    Standard lens: 55 mm f/1.8 or 50 mm f/1.4 SMC[5] Takumar
    Shutter:
Horizontally-running focal plane shutter with electronic or mechanical timing
In AE, shutter speed is continuously variable from 8 seconds to 1/1000 second
Mechanically timed shutter speeds 1/60 - 1/1000 second and 'B' can also be set manually
    No delayed action
hutter cocked by advancing the film (shutter-cocked indicator: red dot in the window next to shutter release)
    Meters:
CdS through-the-lens meter. Usable in full-aperture AE or stopped-down metering.
Sensitivity EV 1-18 at ISO 100.
Exposure compensation -1 to +2 stops offset possible (dial around rewind crank)
Film speeds ISO 20-1600 can be set (dial around rewind crank)
Flash synchronization: Hot shoe (synchronized for X-synch. at 1/60 sec) and separate PC sockets beside lens mount for X- and FP-synch.
    Viewfinder:
Pentaprism viewfinder. Fresnel focusing screen has a central micro prism focusing aid.
he Meter scale on the right-hand side shows shutter speeds 1-1/1000 seconds.
    Film advance:
    Single-stroke winding lever.
    Film rewind:
olding crank; rewind release button on the base.
    Depth-of-field preview (and stop-down for stopped-down metering):
the lever to the left of the lens mount to be used in preference to the lens' stop-down lever.
Dimensions (width x height x depth):
    143 x 98 x 91 mm (presumably with standard lens fitted)
    Weight:
875g(with current lens attached)/940 g (presumably with standard lens fitted)
    Battery:
One 4SR44/PX28A 6V silver oxide battery. Battery compartment to the right of the lens mount.
attery check button next to rewind crank (meter needle should fall below 1/30 sec mark)
    Reviews and Defects
The whole body is angular, but the loose arch at the Penta softens the whole body, which is a pretty good design. The Penta in the ASAHI era is classical. The "
    SMC Takumar Zoom 45-125mm F4
" was now attached to the camera with a UV lens filter and original hood on it, If you attach an SMC-Takumar lens with open metering interlocking claws, it means you can get the proper exposure by pressing the shutter button.
Simply put, if you decide the aperture yourself and press the shutter button, the machine will release the shutter at the proper speed.
In case the electronic shutter breaks, a 1/60-1/1000 second mechanical hutter section(dial) is also incorporated to create a hybrid system. (The battery is dried up in this camera, and we don't have the new ones)
It seems a little extravagant, but I feel the spirit of Japanese companies at the time when they were serious about making things.
    Defects and Remarks:
The lens is in good condition, with no defects but little paint-off on the edge and screw-rust.
All other functions of this camera work normally, except for the shutter release.
    Sometimes when
    press and release
the shutter release button, the reflex mirror will not bounce back after it is closed. The mirror
has become stuck in the "up" position.
you will see nothing but absolute blackness upon looking into your viewfinder (even with the lens cap removed), yet your film transport will continue to advance as usual when cocked and fired. In this condition, the camera will still take photographs, however, you will not be able to frame, focus or meter the shot you wish to take. In other words, the camera is of no constructive/creative use to you.
After some research, we think this fault is not electronic and is not the result of a dead battery or failed circuitry.
Meaning that it is stuck mid-swing.
And there are some tutorials on the internet teaching how to fix this, or you can go to a repair shop and ask for it.
There also has another fault that
there is a black line in the viewfinder
because of the pentaprism that is desilvering, you can go to a repair shop ask for a maintenance or mirror replacement to easily fix this.
These two faults also occur to most other bodies within the Spotmatic family,
which are the common issues of Pentax vintage models.
