    :
Nikonos is the brand name of a series of 35mm format cameras specifically designed for underwater photography launched by Nikon in 1963. The early Nikonos cameras were improvements of the Calypso camera, which was an original design by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Belgian engineer Jean de Wouters. It was produced in France by La Spirotechnique (currently Aqua Lung) until the design was acquired by Nikon to become the Nikonos. The Nikonos system was immensely popular with both amateur and professional underwater photographers. Its compact design, ease of use, and excellent optical quality set the standard for several decades of underwater imaging. Nikon ceased the development and manufacture of new Nikonos cameras in 2001, but the camera remains popular, and there is a large and active secondary market.
NIKONOS I, II, and III are modified or improved versions of Calypso, whereas NIKONOS IV-A is regarded as a Nikon's completely original model developed and designed based on Nikon's proprietary concepts. This model was placed on the market in July 1980 at 54,500 yen. It offered a variety of capabilities.
    1. TTL exposure meter and aperture-priority AE control mechanism
    2. Electronically controlled shutter
    3. Hinged-type open-and-close camera back
    4. Significantly easier operation
The predecessors I, II, and III were designed without a shutter release button but had a mechanism in which the shutter was released when the film advance lever was pushed inward. This design was adopted to ensure resistance to water pressures and minimize the necessity for watertight areas of movable parts. The model IV-A was equipped with a shutter release button and a film advance lever similar to typical cameras for use on land, which provided greater ease of operation during photography. In addition, the inverted Galilean-type Albada viewfinder with an LED display for exposure marking was well received for its ease of use since correct exposure could be obtained simply by confirming that the display was ON. Furthermore, the Speedlight SB-101 designed specifically for NIKONOS provided automatic flash sync. control when used with the attached sensor unit SU-101. When the Speedlight was fully charged, it could be identified by the "ready-light" inside the viewfinder, which helped achieve a level of convenience and ease of operation similar to that of land-use cameras.

"W Nikkor 35mm f/2.5", still used as an interchangeable lens for "NIKONOS V" at present, was born in 1963 at the same time as the first "NIKONOS" was released and since then it has been selling for long 37 years. Among the current Nikkor lenses for 35mm format, it may be the longest-selling lens.
At the time of release, it was the fastest 35mm (3.5cm) lens and its image quality was highly evaluated but it couldn't be denied that the design of the lens was somewhat old-fashioned. Therefore, the curvature and the glass materials were reviewed based on this lens, and the newly designed lens was equipped with "NIKONOS".
"W Nikkor 35mm f/2.5 (amphibious)" has come to the present after several minor improvements including the change of lens barrel design such as the depth of field indicator, the change of the color of the lens barrel, and the focusing knob from silver to black, the change of the lens coating to a multi-layer coating, and so on. The lens has a history of half a century counted from the time of the development of "W-Nikkor 3.5cm f/2.5" which served as the model of the optical system for that lens.
"W Nikkor 35mm f/2.5" lens is consisting of a 4-group, 6-element typical Gauss type lens and a thick parallel plane glass plate arranged in front of the lens. The parallel plane glass is a protector, which serves, so to speak, as a filter in the air, but as a water-tight window underwater that protects the internal lens against high water pressure.
This lens is amphibious (for both on land and underwater) It is noted in every introductory book on underwater photography that the subject looks 1.33 times larger underwater than in air caused by the refractive index of water (1.33), picture angle gets narrower, and the focusing should be made by the distance estimated underwater with the eye, but in addition, the change of aberration cannot be neglected.
The water-resistance of this camera is untested since it is a vintage item, but all the rest of the functions are working as expected.
    Reviews and Defects
    Lovely and technological appearance
The camera is in fully functional condition and extremely good cosmetic condition. There is no damage from use or years on the camera body. All other aspects are in good condition and all functions are working properly as expected. It seems the previous owner even didn't use it at all.
It seems that the machine is in very good condition, except for very little dust.  The overall appearance looks just like a new camera. As shown in the pictures. But there are several dust dots in the finder. Although it does not affect the sight-taking at all.
And there are some brown dust and dirt over the body.
A vintage collection or masterpiece-making tool in really good condition, worth a bid.
