Up for bids is this used Nikon F2-AS Photomic camera body. This is one of the last F2 models produced with an 804xxxx serial
The Nikon F2 is an all-metal, mechanically (springs, gears, levers) controlled, manual focus SLR with manual exposure control. It is completely operable without batteries. In a word - this camera is the ultimate in reliablity. The F2-AS model was the flagship, most advanced model of the F2 and is considered to be the crown jewel of the all mechanical cameras
The F2 was the replacement for Nikon F. It did not introduce many new features (a faster 1/2000th second maximum shutter speed, a swing open back for easier film loading, a larger reflex mirror to ensure no vignetting, and a shutter release relocated to the front edge of the camera for better ergonomics are the most obvious) or any new technologies. Instead, the F2 represented possibly the ultimate expression of the 35 mm SLR as a precision optical instrument. Constructed of 1700 exquisitely engineered parts, the Nikon F2 is widely regarded as one of the finest, if not the finest, mechanical camera ever made
This unit featured the advanced DP-12 finder a far advance from its predecessors of the F2 Photomic, the F2S, F2SB and the F2A, as it allowed auto indexing of the aperture, plus a virtually 100% viewing area and accurate light meter capable of even providing great measurement even in very low light conditions.
Operational Condition
The Finder meter is reacting to light and is giving similar readings to my personal F2AS. The shutter speeds are all firing and seem to sound in the ballpark. The self timer is operating properly. We don't have a shutter tester to confirm speeds or the meter are 100% to factory spec.
Cosmetic Condition
As you can tell from the photos, the camera has a few signs of wear, typical to normal use. Some lifting of the leatherette on the top of the finder. As grading cosmetics is subjective, I included photos that show all sides. No fungus in the finder.
As with any vintage camera, if planning to put back into regular service, you should seek a CLA (clean, lube, adjustment and seals) to make sure everything is 100% to original factory spec
